Before you learn how to get started with cybersecurity, you should clearly know what cybersecurity actually means. Generally, cybersecurity involves techniques that help secure various digital components, networks, data, and computer systems from unauthorized digital access. Organizations use cyber security policies to protect from any attack which could alter, delete, or destroy their data, system, network, etc.

Why do you need cybersecurity?

The first step, in getting started with cybersecurity is to understand what the need for it is, why it is in so much demand, and why you should choose cybersecurity as a career.

So, let’s answer these questions, A cyber security report of 2020 states that there is a triple-digit increase across all malware types around 358% overall, and ransomware increased by 435% as compared with last year. An estimate states that in the last eight years, the unfilled cybersecurity jobs grew by 350 percent, from one million positions in 2013 to 3.5 million in 2021. Colleges and security trade programs are not producing enough graduates to fulfill this requirement. So, from these statistics, you might be clear what is the actual need for cybersecurity and why it is important to learn cybersecurity.

Do you need to be from an IT background?

As we all know that knowledge and skills are most important than a college degree so for starting a career in cybersecurity you don’t actually need to be from an IT background but having an IT background gives you plus points as you require fewer time to learn terms as you are already familiar with it but it doesn’t mean a non-IT personal can not learn things easily you just need to have an interest and passion towards it and you can learn cybersecurity by your own and apply for the job.

What are the domains of cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is a huge field and instead of learning everything, you can choose to learn one domain and be an expert in it. When starting with cybersecurity many people make a mistake by trying to learn all things offered by cybersecurity as a beginner you should first find out one domain in which you are interested and first get hands-on with it then you can go and explore different domains. Some domains of cybersecurity are:

  • Application security: Application security is concerned with securing the software applications used in an organization, such as web applications or mobile apps. This includes identifying and fixing vulnerabilities in the code and ensuring that applications are designed and deployed securely.
  • Identity Management and Data Security: Identity management and data security are two critical domains of cybersecurity that are closely related.Together, identity management and data security help to ensure that only authorized individuals have access to sensitive resources and data within an organization.
  • Network Security: Network security focuses on protecting the infrastructure of computer networks from unauthorized access, misuse, or attacks. This includes securing routers, switches, firewalls, and other network devices.
  • Mobile security: Mobile security is a domain of cybersecurity that focuses on protecting mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, from security threats.
  • Security architecture: Security architecture is a domain of cybersecurity that involves designing and implementing secure systems and networks. Security architecture provides a blueprint for ensuring that an organization's systems and networks are designed to be secure from the ground up.
  • Threat intelligence: Threat intelligence is a domain of cybersecurity that involves the collection, analysis, and dissemination of information about potential security threats.
  • Vulnerability Management: Vulnerability management is a domain of cybersecurity that involves identifying, evaluating, prioritizing, and remediating vulnerabilities in an organization's systems and networks.
  • Cloud Security: Cloud security is a domain of cybersecurity that focuses on protecting data, applications, and infrastructure in cloud computing environments. As more organizations move their data and applications to the cloud, cloud security has become an increasingly important aspect of cybersecurity.

What Skills are required for cybersecurity jobs?

There are various skills which are required to get started with cybersecurity and some of them are listed below but the most important skill is a curiosity to learn cybersecurity as this is the one thing that will keep you going

  1. Having a knowledge of programming languages (Python, golang, assembly, etc)
  2. Technical Aptitude
  3. Knowledge of hardware and operating system
  4. Networking
  5. Linux administrating
  6. Automation
  7. Cloud knowledge
  8. An understanding of Cyber forensics

Different job roles in cybersecurity

The network security engineer makes sure that security measures are put in place within the company to counter and stop threats.

          2. Cyber security Analyst

A cyber security analyst aids in the development, implementation, and improvement of security controls and measures.

          3. Cyber security Manager

Cybersecurity managers focus on the maintenance of security protocols throughout the organization.

          4. Cybersecurity Engineer

A cybersecurity engineer develops and implements secure network solutions. Cybersecurity engineers are a crucial component of the system since they may boost technological initiatives and advance them.

          5. Cloud security Engineer
